History of Houston, Missouri
One legend has it that Sam Houston stopped overnight in the village en route to Texas and gained many admirers. Thus, the town was named for the founder of the new state of Texas. June 1846 is Houston's official birthday.

The Civil War was a period of conflict and turmoil in the Houston area.  The population was predominately southern and a few of the settlers owned slaves.   Houston was caught in crossfires, pillages and burned by the Union Army, the Confederates and later the bushwackers.  The former courthouse location was occupied during the war as headquarters of the Union Army.  Confederate soldiers objecting to the use of the courthouse by the federal troops stormed the town, burning every building.  Before the courthouse was burned the Confederates loaded up all county records and hauled them to a cave on Arthur's Creek.  They returned all of the books after the war ended. Houston was reorganized in 1872 and those remaining looked to the future.
In 1908, Dr. P.A. Herrington, a pharmacist, purchased the Lone Star Mill west of Houston on Big Piney River and electricity was generated for the town. In 1952, Houston voters approved a bond issue that enabled Houston to buy and maintain its own light system.

Former President Harry Truman came to Houston on November 7, 1958, to dedicate the new Texas County Memorial Hospital. Dr. T.J. Burns, who once worked in the White House as a doctor, was instrumental in getting the hospital built.  Our hospital has grown to a 66 bed facility with services that include obstetrics, surgery, intensive care, respiratory therapy, caridac rehabilitation, physical therapy, home health and hospice care.
